Oscar Velasco BA in Linguistics, 2000 I'm currently a Linguistic Text Engineer for Microsoft, working in the Natural Language Group focused on Spanish. My group concerns itself with natural language processing and shipping products that derive from this technology. In my daily work I am thinking up and implementing ways to evaluate lexical, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and discourse analyses that are produced by our system. The Linguistics program at UCSC provided me with the foundation for my current work, which involves understanding and evaluating the soundness of linguistic analyses. The courses and projects that I was involved in at UCSC helped me to develop the ability to think critically and come up with well-supported solutions to linguistic problem spaces, based on a given set of data. These are skills that can be applied not only to the field that I am in now, but to any field that involves formulating an analysis based on empirical evidence.
