Life After the Department

After receiving the B.A., some of our undergraduate majors go on to pursue advanced degrees in Linguistics and related fields. The Department welcomes applications from its own majors to the M.A. program, which can be completed in one year of study after the B.A. Our majors also have a high acceptance rate at other top-ranked Ph.D. programs.

But most Linguistics and Language Studies majors go on to careers outside academia -- in fields such as communications, the computer industry, government, journalism, law, and teaching. In Fall 2002, we asked eight of our undergraduate alumni, plus a non-major who had taken courses in our Department, to comment on how their education in Linguistics or Language Studies has helped them in their current career. Their responses highlight the value of the training they received in critical analysis (`capturing the generalization'), argumentation, collaborative work habits, writing, and teaching. Many observe that the analytic skills fundamental to linguistics can be used in any domain. A few offer perceptive comments on how to respond to the question, 'What is linguistics?'. To read their responses, click on the names below.
