We are happy to announce that Ashley Hardisty has returned from her maternity leave. Ashley will be working Monday-Friday from 8:30-12:30 PM for one year. We're all very glad she's back!

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Evynn Testa-Avila, whose project on Meter and Syntax in the Alcaic Odes of Horace was selected for a 2003-04 Humanities Undergraduate Research Award! Evynn's supervisor for this project is Sandy Chung.

Alexa Goldstrom, a senior Language Studies major, has also been awarded a 2003-04 Humanities Undergraduate Research Award. Her project is entitled "A Chachapoya History," and includes the translation of a Spanish text written by an indigenous elder living in the Chachapoya region of Peru. Alexa's faculty advisor is Judith Aissen.

Line Mikkelsen will preview her Edinburgh job-talk at 1:00 PM on Thursday afternoon, December 4th in the LCR. All are invited to attend.

On Tuesday January 6 from 2:30 to 3:30 PM, Jorge Hankamer and Line Mikkelsen will practice two presentations to be delivered at the LSA meeting in Boston the following weekend:

"A Puzzle about PPs in Danish definite DPs" (15 minutes + discussion)
"Reexamining Higgins' taxonomy: A split in the Identificational class" (30 minutes + discussion)

The practice presentations will take place in The Cave. Everyone is invited to attend.

There is a new collaborative project between UCSC philosophy and linguistics. Michela Ippolito and Chris Hom (a Faculty Fellow in the Philosophy Department) have formed the Santa Cruz Language and Linguistics Reading Group (SCLL). The group will meet monthly to discuss contemporary work in formal semantics and the philosophy of language. An organizational meeting will be held today, Wednesday, December 3, at 6:00 PM in the LCR.

Recent visiting scholar Dora Alexopoulou sent the following note:
"This is just to say that I am back safely in England (though with a terrible jetlag and getting used again to wet grey weather) and to say a very big thank you to everybody for such a wonderful stay we had in Santa Cruz. The Psychology Department Colloquium Series Cognitive Program presents Hiroshi Yamada, Nijon University (Japan), speaking on "Recognizing Facial Expressions." This colloquium will be held today, Wednesday, December 3 from 3:30-5:00 PM in Social Sciences 2, Rm. 121.
