The Linguistic Society of America has announced that the winner of the seventh bi-annual Leonard Bloomfield Book Award is The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, by Rodney Huddleston and Geoffrey K. Pullum (published by Cambridge University Press in 2002), an 1842-page descriptive grammar of English. Rodney Huddleston (University of Queensland, Australia) started planning it soon after 1990, and Geoff Pullum joined the team in 1996, spending five consecutive summers (i.e., winters) in Australia working with Huddleston on the book between 1996 and 2001.

The Leonard Bloomfield Book Award was first presented in 1992, and is given to recognize the volume by an LSA member that in the opinion of the award committee has made the most outstanding contribution to the development of our understanding of language and linguistics. Previous winners include Keren Rice, Johanna Nichols, William Labov, Alice Harris and Lyle Campbell, and Marianne Mithun. The formal presentation of the award will be at the LSA Business Meeting on January 9th, 2004, during the 78th Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. From Line Mikkelsen:

"On October 23 I delivered a guest lecture at Scotts Valley High School as part of the Humanities in the Schools Program, a program that brings humanities graduate students to middle and high schools in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties to talk about humanities research and the kinds of things that we are concerned with. Robert Conde spoke earlier this year as part of the same program at Fairway Middle School in Gonzales. At Scotts Valley HS, I spoke about presupposition and factive verbs, as part of a Theories of Knowledge class. I also managed to make a plug for the Languagelog (www.languagelog.org), the new blog among whose contributors we find Geoff Pullum and Chris Potts (Ph.D. 2003).

I will be giving a talk at a workshop on formal and computational linguistics in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 3rd. My talk is entitled "Kopulasaetninger og deres subjekter--bidrag til en formal karakteristik" (that is "Copular clauses and their subjects--towards a formal characterization"). Among the other speakers are Patrick Blackburn (INRIA Lorraine, France), whose work has important ties with the work that of Geoff Pullum and Chris Potts, and Matthias Kromann, who gave a colloquium here at UCSC last fall. I will also be giving a colloquium at the Department of Linguistics at University of Aarhus (in Jylland, Denmark) on Friday, November 7."
