NEWS

Vera Lee-Schoenfeld recently returned from a trip to the University of Durham, in the United Kingdom, where she presented a paper at this year's meeting of the Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop (CGSW 18, http://www.dur.ac.uk/durham.linguist/). The paper Vera presented, "German Possessor Datives: Raised *And* Affected" was well-received and provoked a lot of discussion, making interesting connections especially with the work of Susi Wurmbrand (University of Connecticut), who was one of the invited speakers. Also among the invited speakers was UC Santa Cruz graduate Peter Svenonius, who spoke on "Stalking the Wild Parameter: Parametric variation and distance between languages". The talk was based on research conducted at the recently-inaugurated Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) at Tromso (http://uit.no/castl/2612/). Peter, who graduated from UCSC in 1994, is now a Senior Researcher at CASTL.

UCSC will be well represented at LSA this year. A paper co-authored by Line Mikkelsen and Jorge Hankamer, "A puzzle about PPs in Danish definite DPs," was accepted for presentation, as was Line's abstract "Reexamining Higgins' taxonomy: a split in the identificational class." Adam Albright had a paper accepted as well, entitled "The emergence of the marked: Root-domain markedness constraints in Lakhota." Congratulations to all!
