ACCOLADES

Congratulations to the presenters at the UCSC Linguistics Undergraduate Research Conference held on Wednesday, June 1:  Kashmiri Stec, Napoleon Buenrostro and Nick Reynolds.  Great job!

Also, we thank this year's keynote speaker Gina Taranto who presented her research on Discourse Adjectives.  Gina graduated UCSC in 1994 with a BA in
Linguistics (Kresge College, with College Honors). She went on to attend
graduate school in Linguistics at UC San Diego, where she graduated in 2003
with a Ph.D. She currently holds the position of Discourse Analyst/Linguist at H5 Technologies in San
Francisco (http://www.h5technologies.com/).

Congratulations to Ascander Dost, who has successfully defended his QE paper, "Second position clitics in Pashto without (syntactic) second positions". As soon as approval comes from the Graduate Division, Ascander will officially be a candidate for the PhD. Committee members were Judith Aissen (chair), Geoff Pullum, Sandy Chung, and Peter Sells (Stanford).

Congratulations to Pete Alrenga who advanced to candidacy by defending
his paper `Comparisons of Similarity and Difference' before a throng
of examiners which included David Beaver, Donka Farkas, Bill Ladusaw,
Jim McCloskey, and Veerle Van Geenhoven.

Congratulations to Alia Sperling who successfully defended her MA
thesis on `The Syntax of Not-so-Free Relatives.' Alia's committee
comprised Sandy Chung and Jim McCloskey.
