KUDOS
Congratulations to Geoff Pullum who has been selected as one of the first recipients of the UCSC Humanities Distinguished Professor Award. Geoff will receive $5,000 per year as a research stipend for four consecutive years. The others selected were Professors James Clifford (History of Consciousness), Carla Freccero (Literature), Gail Hershatter (History), and David Hoy (Philosophy). All of the award-winning professors said they would primarily use the funds to support graduate students in their departments.

WELCOME
Welcome to Ben Hermans from Tilburg University, The Netherlands, who will arrive Monday to visit the department during the month of May. Ben is a phonologist working mainly in Slavic. He will be consulting with Jaye Padgett on vowel reduction in Russian.

The institute of International Education (IIE) announces the launch of the 2005-2006 Fulbright Student Competition.
For more than 57 years, the U.S. Government-sponsored Fulbright U.S. Student Program has provided future American leaders with an unparalleled opportunity to study and conduct research in other nations.
The U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,000 grants annually and currently operates in over 140 countries worldwide. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Applicants to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and hold a bachelor's degree or the equivalent by the beginning of the grant.
