ACCOLADES Congratulations to Anya Hogoboom, who passed her syntax qualifying paper defense on Thursday, March 20. The title of her paper is "Finding and Licensing pro in Norwegian". The committee members were Jorge, Jim, and Donka. *************************************** Thank you to Nathan Sanders for coordinating Slug Pubs for the past four years. Nathan has passed the baton to Anya Hogoboom, Vera Lee-Schoenfeld and Lynsey Wolter. *************************************** WELCOME We welcome two prospective graduate students who are visiting the department this week. Tara McAllister is from Harvard University and Cristina Kim is from MIT. *************************************** Bon voyage to Armin and Junko who are invited speakers at the 39th Annual Conference of the Chicago Linguistic Society at The University of Chicago April 10-12. *************************************** WCCFL 22 REPORT Andy Wedel, Adam Ussishkin, Adam Albright, Joey Sabbagh and Anne Sturgeon presented papers at WCCFL March 21-23. Joey's talk was "Right Node Raising is Sometimes Movement before and Sometimes after Spellout." Everyone's talks were very well received. The focus of the conference was on Experimental Approaches to Theoretical Linguistics and there were many interesting talks on this topic. Santa Cruz alums Chris Barker, John Moore and Dan Brassil were there as well. No. 34, December 2002. *************************************** Proposals for UC-wide Instructional Technology Grants Due April 21 The UC Teaching, Learning & Technology Center (TLtC) is seeking proposals for its Intercampus Collaborative Grants program, which aims at furthering innovative and appropriate uses of technology in teaching and learning through partnerships across the campuses. UC faculty are invited to apply for TLtC Full-scale Expansion & Implementation grants (up to $75k per year for a maximum of three years) which are intended to expand curricular strategies that use technology beyond a single campus, for the potential benefit of the entire UC system. The deadline to submit proposals is April 21.
