Conferences Hosted by the Department LASC (Linguistics at Santa Cruz) Every year towards the end of the Winter Quarter, the department mounts a conference which showcases the research of second and third year graduate students. LASC 2008 took place on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, 2008 in the Stevenson Fireside Lounge. LASC 2007 took place on Saturday March 3rd in Room 210 of Humanities One. LASC 2006 took place on Friday-Saturday, March 3-4, 2006, in the Silverman Fireside Lounge and Baytree Conference Center room D. See the program for more details, as well as abstracts. LASC 2005 took place on Saturday, March 5, 2005 in the Silverman Conference Room at Stevenson College, UCSC. The program is available here. LURC (Linguistics Undergraduate Research Conference) Towards the end of the Spring Quarter each year, the department mounts a conference which showcases the research of undergraduate students in its programs. LURC 2005 took place at Stevenson College, Silverman Room on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. ). The invited speaker was Gina Taranto, Discourse Analyst/Linguist, H5 Technologies, San Francisco (BA in Linguistics, UCSC, 1994 and PhD in Linguistics, UCSD, 2003). LURC 2004 took place at Stevenson College, Silverman Room on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. ). A pdf file of the program may be viewed here. The invited speaker was Jason Riggle, UCLA (BA in Linguistics and Psychology, UCSC, 1997 and MA in LInguistics, UCSC, 1999). On Saturday April 21st 2007, the department will host a workshop on Poetics and Meter, featuring invited talks by Paul Kiparsky, Sandy Chung, Ellen Hart, Lev Blumenfeld and others. Further information and the program is available here.The UCSC Linguistics Department hosted the twenty-first Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop (CGSW-21) March 31-April 2, 2006. See the website for more information. A conference entitled Modality and Its Kin occurred on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the Cowell Conference Room, UCSC. Semanticists from UCLA, Stanford, as well as UCSC, presented their research. The program may be viewed by clicking here (PDF). The Southwestern Optimality Theory Workshop (SWOT 2004 program; PDF) was held at UCSC on May 14 & 15, 2004.
