Structure of Japanese

Ling 187: Structure of Japanese

The course covers the structure of Japanese from a linguistic perspective. Topics to be covered include: various aspects of Japanese phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The primary goal of the course is to gain a deeper understanding of the grammatical structure of contemporary Japanese. A secondary goal is to discover the differences and similarities of English and Japanese from a sophisticated linguistic perspective.

Prerequisite(s): Ling 101 (Phonology One), and either Ling 52 (Syntax One), or Ling 55 (Syntactic Structures). No prior knowledge of Japanese is presupposed.
