Language and Social Identity Ling 154: Language and Social Identity This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics, exploring the relationship between language and such social parameters as social status, ethnicity, race, gender, etc., including the role of language differences in the creation of social stereotypes. It emphasizes the gathering, examining, and reporting of data. Enrollment is usually restricted to senior Language Studies majors.Prerequisites: Either Ling 55 (Syntactic Structures) or Ling 52 (Syntax One), along with Ling 101 (Phonology One) and Ling 53 (Semantics One).
