Language Change Ling 140: Language Change This course addresses the methods and problems in the study of linguistic systems. Is sound change regular? What are the strengths and the limits of the comparative method? What does the study of linguistic variation and of language acquisition tell us about the sources and trajectories of changes in language? What is a 'proto-language'? How does one go about reconstructing one? What does the contemporary theory of phonology (and of grammar) have to say about the ways linguistic systems change over time?
Prerequisites: Ling 102 (Phonology Two). General Education Code: None
