Structure of English

Ling 120: Structure of English

This is a survey course of the grammatical structure of English and the terminology of grammatical description. It covers the phonological, morphological, and syntactic structure of English and contrasts it with other languages. The course gives participants an opportunity to use the analytical skills acquired in earlier linguistics courses to better understand the English language, to better understand certain modes of linguistic description and standardization, and to survey the major syntactic constructions of English from practical and descriptive perspectives.

Prerequisite(s): Ling 101 (Phonology One), and either Ling 52 (Syntax One), or Ling 55 (Syntactic Structures).

General Education Code: None
