Syntax Two

Ling 113: Syntax Two

Syntax II continues the investigation of English syntax and the development of a theory of transformational grammar begun in Linguistics 52 (Syntax I). The course expands the range of English constructions covered, to include a broader range of infinitival constructions and also so-called unbounded dependency constructions (a class which includes constituent questions, relative clauses and others). At the same time, it is designed to deepen your understanding of argument structure, the role of the lexicon and, most importantly, the role of general constraints on rules (as opposed to conditions on particular rules). Another important theme is the way in which coordination interacts with other syntactic processes. Overall, larger questions about language-design will figure more prominently than they did in Syntax I. The pedagogical strategy is the same as that followed in Syntax I. That is, the course is a cooperative intellectual effort involving instructors and students in which class responses to homework and class discussion determines most, if not all, of what happens.

Prerequisites: Satisfaction of the entry level writing requirement (ELWR) and Composition (C-2) requirement; Ling 52 (Syntax One).

General Education Code: W (Writing-Intensive).
