Ling 101: Phonology One

This course is an introduction to morphology and phonological theory and analysis. Discovery procedures will be emphasized, with problems in phonemic and morphophonemic variation, phonological rules and rule systems. Goals include: a) to learn about common sound patterns in languages, and seek to understand why they occur; b) To learn how to analyze novel data from particular languages; c) To acquire general skills in analyzing complex data, uncovering generalizations, and arguing in a rigorous and compelling way for a point of view; d) To learn how hypotheses are developed and motivated against alternatives, how predictions are made and tested; and e) The best way of learning phonology (and the rest of linguistics) is by doing it, hence the emphasis on problem sets.

Prerequisites: Satisfaction of entry level writing requirement (ELWR) and Composition (C-2) requirement; Ling 50 (Introduction to Linguistics).
